Ohio Introduces New 14-Day Online Boat Rental Test Option

Planning to rent a boat in Ohio? Getting on the water just became more convenient.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) has officially approved a new online option for completing the mandatory abbreviated boating safety examination required for certain boat renters.

This update gives renters the flexibility to complete their required boating safety test before arriving at the rental location, helping reduce delays and making the rental process faster and more convenient. The online option include pre-test study materials.

What Changed?

Previously, individuals who were required to complete the abbreviated boating safety exam could only take the test on-site at the rental business under the supervision of rental staff.

Under the new rule, renters now have two options:

  • Complete the traditional on-site written examination at the rental business.
  • Complete an approved online abbreviated boating safety examination.

How the New Online Rental Test Works

To comply with Ohio’s new regulation:

  • The online exam must be completed through an ODNR-approved boating education exam provider, like BoatTests101.com, at https://boattests101.com/united-states/ohio/ohio-rental
  • Your online certificate is valid for 14 days from the date you successfully pass the exam.
  • You must present proof of completion to the rental operator before your rental begins.
  • If requested by law enforcement while operating the boat, you must also be able to provide proof that you successfully completed the online examination.

The Existing On-Site Test Remains Available

Rental businesses may continue offering the traditional written examination at their location.

For renters choosing the on-site option:

  • The exam must be taken under the supervision of the rental business.
  • No reference materials may be used.
  • No assistance may be provided while taking the exam.
  • Renters are limited to two attempts per calendar day.
  • A passing score is only valid for that specific rental business and rental period.
