Colorado Boat Course

Motorboat operators who are 14 thru 17 years of age must complete a boater education course approved by Colorado Parks and Wildlife and have onboard an ID card issued by the CPW or an approved co BMV.

Motorboat operators 18 years of age or older are not required to complete any boater education, but it is still a good idea. The training introduces you to safety measures, proper boating procedures, and the state's laws.

PWC Requirements

A person under 14 years of age may not operate a motorboat or personal watercraft (PWC) on Colorado public waters.

Operators who are 14 through 17 years of age may operate a motorboat or PWC only if they have completed a boater education course approved by Colorado Parks and Wildlife AND have a Boating Safety Certificate issued by the boating safety course provider in their possession.

A person 18 years of age or older may operate a motorboat or PWC on Colorado public waters.

Is it called a Boating License?

Some people may call it a Boat License or Boaters License. However, it is not a license. It is known as a Boater Education Certificate or a Boater Education Card. The reason it is not called a Colorado boating license is that it does not expire or need to be renewed.

After you have successfully completed the NASBLA / Colorado approved Boater Safety Course and Exam, you will be issued a Colorado Boater Card. This card is good for life.

Remember, your Boater Card must be carried with you while operating marine vessels. Otherwise, it may result in a fine from a local law enforcement officer.
