A boat certification is required by all boat operators in West Virginia who were born after December 31, 1986. Getting a boat license or attending an education program is not necessary for WV drivers born before this date. Oftentimes, drivers of small boats without a motor do not need to meet licensing requirements either.

Persons 12 to 14 years of age may operate a motorboat or PWC only if:

They have passed a boating safety education course and if they are accompanied by a person 18 years or older on board the vessel or the vessel is 10 horsepower or less.

Once you pass and pay for the West Virginia boater course, you will be able to immediately print out the Certificate of Completion. This is your proof of online course completion. You can print the Certificate of Completion right then, and/or request that a PDF be emailed to you.
